Greetings From Keith Dixon, Ph.D., Superintendent

Welcome to our school district website and thanks for your interest!

Whether you're new to Duluth or a longtime resident, we invite you to learn more about what we offer our children, families and the community.

All of our schools aim to help every student succeed. In Duluth, our students outperform state averages in reading and math, and our high school students outperform state and national averages in the ACT college entrance exams. The achievement gap sometimes experienced by low-income students and students of color has narrowed significantly in our district, more so than other urban school districts in Minnesota. Because every child has a different learning style, we offer many ways for students to succeed, from a traditional classroom setting to the Leonard Bernstein Artful Learning Program, to our Secondary Technical Center where students learn a career while they earn a high school diploma.

We work to provide an environment where all children and adults involved in our schools feel safe and welcome. Our responsive classroom program helps elementary students develop the social skills they need to be successful academically and socially. A recent project, conducted in partnership with the Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation, provides weekly courses in civility to middle school students, and has gained state and national attention. We provide many other programs to help children develop the skills they need to get along with others.

We also work to create efficient and effective systems to maximize our human and financial resources, and to keep the majority of those resources focused on the classroom. Community partnerships, local donations, grants and the support of over one thousand volunteers help keep our programs strong. Please feel free to call 218-336-8735, or any of our schools, to learn more.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Keith Dixon
